A Series on Intergenerational Conversations

What does it mean to listen to each other? What does it mean to communicate across generations? To explore these questions, the Dragon Fruit Project is putting on a collaborative series on Intergenerational Conversations. From August 12 to August 15 these events will work to engage with the different ways that LGBTQ API people have supported each other, built community, and created history!

Join API Equality – Northern California, API Queer Women and Transgender Community (APIQWTC), the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA), and Trikone Bay Area for 4 days of reflection, conversation, and community building. Here’s what’s going down on each day:

Mentorship in the LGBTQ API Community – August 12th
After decades of organizing safe spaces for LGBTQ API community, we are now at a point where different generations are thriving in their work, family, and daily life. It is a crucial time for us to think about how mentorship can exist within the LGBTQ API community so that everyone can be lifted. We will discuss ways to actively support each other with advice, resources, skills, and more! All ages are welcome and encouraged to attend!

  • When: Wednesday, August 12th |  6:30pm – 8:00pm

  • Where: Downtown Oakland, off 19th St. BART (exact address to be emailed out)

Listening Through Generations, our feature event of the series, looks to explore how we, as an LGBTQ Asian and Pacific Islander community, can listen to each other and celebrate our community histories! Join us as we listen to featured stories from the Dragon Fruit Project. In collaboration with StoryCorps, we will hear from project participants and community members who have engaged with storytelling and build conversation across generations!

  • When: Thursday, August 13th | 6:00pm – 7:30pm

  • Where: SF Main Library | 100 Larkin St. SF 94102 (off Civic Center BART)

Social Media and Creating Community Skill Share – August 14th
The ways that LGBTQ API people build community are always shifting, and in recent years, the use of social media has allowed LGBTQ API people from all around the United States (and the world) to connect, build, and create with each other. Through conversation and presentation, this skill share is an opportunity to talk about the purposes and strengths of various social media sites through concrete examples of “social media activism,” while also learning about how community was built before the age of Facebook and Twitter.

  • When: Friday, August 14th | 12:00pm – 1:30pm

  • Where: Chinese for Affirmative Action Community Room | 17 Walter U. Lum Pl. San Francisco, 94108

Rice Bowl – August 15th
Started in 1995 by APIQWTC, GAPA, and Trikone, Rice Bowl emerged as a way for LGBTQ API people to mix, mingle, and build community with each other. After a hiatus, Rice Bowl is back! Join us at San Pablo Park in Berkeley to eat food, play games, and have tons of fun.

  • When: Saturday, August 15th | 11:00am – 2:00pm

  • Where: San Pablo Park | 2800 Park St, Berkeley, CA 94702
